What is a Masjid

The Masjid is an Arabic word which means mosque in the English language. A masjid is a place where Muslims perform prayers and worship Allah

The Masjid is the center of the Muslim Community: beside being a place of worship and prayer, study and education, entertainment and charitable work, as well as a social center. There are actually several different names are used to refer to a Masjid such as: “Mosque, Musallah, and Islamic Centre.”

At a minimum, a Masjid is a place of worship. It is the place where Muslims come together for congregational daily prayer services. Jummah (Friday) prayer service. As per Islamic tradition there is more merit to praying with a group than there is in praying alone.

Functions of a Masjid (Mosque)?

A Masjid is also the place where adults and children receive their basic religious education. Mosques and Islamic centres often has a decent size library stocked with faith based text for study and to give away. It’s a place where members of the Muslim community conduct their Islamic Marriage. Often functions as a sort of town hall where matters of importance to the community can be discussed.

In addition, the Masjid functions as a social welfare agency, collecting and dispensing Zakat and other items for the aid of the poor and needy within the community.

It is narrated on the authority of (‘Abdullah) son of Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Prophet (may peace of Allah be upon him) said:

(The superstructure of) al-Islam is raised on five (pillars), i. e. the oneness of Allah, the establishment of prayer, payment of Zakat, the, fast of Ramadan, Pilgrimage (to Mecca). A person said (to ‘Abdullah b. Umar the narrator): Which of the two precedes the other-Pilgrimage or the fasts of Rarnadan? Upon this he (the narrator) replied: No (it is not the Pilgrimage first) but the fasts of Ramadan precede the Pilgrimage.
